Whether you're just starting to establish credit or trying to rebuild after a difficult financial period, improving your credit doesn't happen overnight.
The good news? You don't have to fix everything at once.
Small, consistent steps can help you build a stronger financial foundation over time. Here are five places to start.
1. Know Where You Stand
Before you can make a plan, it helps to understand what's on your credit report and what may be affecting your score.
Review your credit regularly and look for things such as missed payments, high credit card balances or information you don't recognize.
Community Focus members can use SavvyMoney® through Online Banking to monitor their credit score, receive credit alerts and track changes over time.
2. Make Your Payments on Time
Payment history is an important part of your credit.
Set reminders or automatic payments to help make sure bills aren't accidentally missed. If paying everything at once feels overwhelming, start by getting organized. Make a list of what you owe, the payment amounts and when each bill is due.
Sometimes simply seeing everything in one place makes it easier to create a plan.
3. Work on Credit Card Balances
If you use credit cards, try to avoid consistently carrying balances close to your credit limits.
You don't necessarily have to pay everything off immediately. Focus on making payments on time while gradually bringing balances down.
As your balances decrease, you're also reducing the amount of interest you may be paying each month.
4. Consider Tools Designed to Help Build Credit
If you have little credit history—or you're rebuilding after past challenges—there are products specifically designed to help establish positive payment history.
Community Focus offers options including a Credit Builder Loan and Share Secured Credit Card.
For younger adults ages 18–26 who are beginning their financial journey, our MyWay Account also provides credit-building opportunities along with checking, savings and financial education.
The right option depends on your individual situation, so don't feel like you have to figure it out on your own.
5. Ask for Help
This might be the most important step.
If you're not sure where to begin, sit down with someone and talk about it.
At Community Focus, our Free Financial Checkup gives members an opportunity to receive one-on-one guidance, understand their credit report, identify financial goals and create a plan for moving forward.
Sometimes the first step isn't applying for another financial product.
Sometimes it's simply having a conversation.
Your Credit Story Isn't Finished
We've seen firsthand how much can change over time.
One Community Focus member came to us after past financial challenges had affected his credit. He continued working on his finances and building positive credit habits. Later, he returned to Community Focus and was able to refinance his vehicle at a significantly lower rate.
The result was a lower monthly payment and approximately $3,380 in projected interest savings over the remaining life of his loan.
His story is an important reminder: where your credit stands today doesn't necessarily determine where it will be tomorrow.
Building credit takes patience and consistency. You don't have to do it perfectly, and you don't have to do it alone.
